Chapter Eight

I took a deep breath, straightened my tie, and then rang the bell. George, Nelson’s big boy, opened the door and showed his yellow teeth. “What do you know?” he said.

“Tell your boss I want to see him, Shorty.”

“He’s going to like that just fine. Just fine.” Then, without taking his eyes off me, he called out, “Danny, that Maguire wise guy is out here.”

“Send him in, George.”

George made a mock bow and I brushed past him in the best tough-guy tradition. I wasn’t feeling so tough, I can tell you that. For one thing, I wasn’t carrying a gun. I was trying to make this look like a casual call, just dropping in to say hello and see what was new. I can take care of myself, all right. Except when there are more than two guys.

Danny’s apartment was everything you could picture a successful gangster’s place to be. It was all very modern―big, comfortable, sexy-looking furniture. It was an upstairs-downstairs apartment with a fancy lucite staircase. There was a big picture window overlooking the lake. It was the same view I had got from the window of Gloria’s hotel room.

Danny was sitting at a small table in front of this big window having his breakfast. The newspaper was propped up in front of him.

“Hello, Johnny. Glad to see you. You saved me and the boys a trip.”

I swaggered over to the table and sat across from Nelson. There was a plate with a few pieces of toast on it. I picked up a piece and started munching it. “You’ve found Gloria, then?”

“No, Johnny. I didn’t find Gloria.”

He pushed a container of jelly toward me. “It’s good jelly. Homemade. My mother made it.”

“Funny,” I said, “you don’t think of guys like you as having mothers.”

He laughed. “I guess you’re right. Guys like me only have dolls. Like Gloria. huh?”

“No sign of her yet?”

“Not a thing, Johnny. That’s why I was going to come round to see you. I thought maybe you’d heard from her since I saw you yesterday.”

I shook my head.

“Well, Johnny, she’ll turn up. Like I said, she needs that needle so bad she can’t last long without it. By the way, Johnny, speaking of needles, have you seen the paper?”

“Yeah. About the guy that was knocked off at the country club last night? I was there when it happened.”

“You must have seen an earlier edition. I get the later morning edition, the one with racing news in it. Interesting story.” He handed me the newspaper. “Here, take a look.”

All of a sudden that newspaper was hot, too hot to handle. It took everything I had to hold on to it without shaking.
